Contents insurance generally covers damage to your possessions due to lightning, explosion, fire or earthquake, theft , riots or vandalism, flooding or storms, subsidence, moving objects (such as a cars hitting your home), falling trees and escaping or leaking water or oil (from a tank or pipe, say).
It can also cover:
- Your legal liability as occupier of the house, eg if a visitor has an accident and injures themselves
- Theft of cash from your home
- Accomodation and Storage Costs if you cant live in your home due to damage
- Contents of your outbuildings (The amount of cover can vary from policy to policy)
- Replacement keys and locks, and locksmith's fees if you happen to damage or lose your keys
- Optional extras
Optional Extras
- Accidental Damage - For an extra premium you can extend cover to these items. If you have an active household this can be usefull (Say young children) But if your house is less active it might not be worth paying the extra
- Personal Possessions - covers loss of your possessions away from home, eg a handbag or camera
- Legal Cover - this covers the cost of legal proceedings if you need to bring action or defend a claim
- High Value Items - If you have possessions of a particularly high value you can increase the level of protection against them to ensure they are covered correctly
